During 2006, composer Cecilia McDowall and poet Christie Dickason visited five organic farms stretching from West Dorset to the Isle of Mull to gather ideas and inspiration for a new piece of music specially written for the Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir.
The idea originally came about when we met up with the choir’s representatives, including David Gostick (musical director) to discuss ways of linking music and organic farming.
The Soil Association were also very interested in the idea, having previously been involved in setting up residencies for artists and poets on various organic farms. However, the idea of a composer visiting a farm was completely new.
Five farms were soon contacted and all said ‘yes’ immediately.
These were:
- Woodlands Farm, Boston, Lincs.
- Low Luckens Farm, Carlisle, Cumbria
- Becklands Farm, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset
- Ardalanish Organic Farm, Isle of Mull
- Blaen y Nant Organic Farm, Nant Ffrancon, Gwynedd
The new commission called “Five Seasons” was performed in Sherborne Abbey, Dorset on 18th November 2006 and a second performance was held in Cardiff at the Soil Association conference in January 2007. |
